Senga Sharkey

Having returned to County Fermanagh after many years in London, my paintings are shaped by my experiences of both environments, urban and rural, though I am often inspired by memories, feelings, and imagination rather than specific people or places. Storytelling is also central to my work, both in my semi abstract and fully abstract pieces. I aim for a contemplative response from viewers, inviting them to use their own feelings and experiences to form personal narratives based on what they see.

Each painting begins with random marks, collage, and paint applied intuitively. This instinctive approach often conflicts with my logical mind, which seeks safety. Overriding this, I draw from stored emotions and memories to create stronger imagery. Layers are added, scraped back, or obscured, reflecting my fascination with what lies beneath - both literally and metaphorically.

Experimentation, risk, and play are vital to my process, leading to surprises and unexpected imagery. As the painting evolves, metaphor, symbol, and pattern can emerge through text, stencilling, or fragments of collage. Each stage presents new challenges, with decisions to keep or remove elements being at the heart of my practice. This push-and-pull process brings me immense joy and drives my art, allowing the painting itself to guide the unfolding narrative.
